New revolutionary EMS research from Equery is looking for 50 horses
A new, revolutionary study investigates the impact of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in combination with infrared on the back & middle gluteal (hindquarters) muscles of warmblood sport horses. The question is: can EMS technology achieve qualitative muscle building or not? For the research, they are looking for 50 warmblood sport horses with insufficient or weak back & middle gluteal (hindquarter) muscles.
EMS research in collaboration with Ghent University
In 2021, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University will carry out a research into the impact of EMS technology, 'electrical' muscular stimulation, in combination with infrared on the back & middle gluteal (hindquarters) muscles of sport horses. The Equery R6 device will be used to test whether the EMS technology with infrared can achieve muscle building. The research is a collaboration between Ghent University (Dr. Maarten Oosterlinck, veterinarian Anna Mokry & student Lisa Woord), physiotherapist osteopath Siska Vandendriessche and veterinarian Paul Hanssens.
The examination will be carried out objectively, blindfolded and placebo-controlled on a group of 40 to 50 sport horses, which will be examined weekly during 8 weeks. The treatment lasts approximately one hour, and will be carried out for five consecutive weeks.
VAHL Award for promising research
The research plan has already been rewarded with the VAHL Award 2020 for promising future research in Europe. This organisation ('Veterinary Academy of Higher Learning') is a worldwide training institute dedicated to the continuous education of veterinarians.
Equery: muscle building, training & rehabilitation
Equery was designed to increase the natural muscle mass of horses but also to preserve it during rehabilitation. The Equery equipment can be used as a warm-up or cool-down, to replace a part of your (strenuous) training but also as part of the treatment of certain back problems such as kissing spines.
The Equery R6 device uses EMS, electrical muscular stimulation and infrared technology. The technology delivers electrical stimulation directly to the muscles, causing them to contract and relax, just like during physical activities or training but much deeper, controlled and on the right type of muscle fibres.
Horses wanted
For the study they are looking for 50 warmblood sport horses that are weak or insufficiently muscled (back & hindquarter - middle gluteal muscles) for various reasons: a young horse, a horse that had to rehabilitate after recovering from an injury, a horse that is insufficiently trained,... However, horses where lameness is at the basis of poor back musculature are not suitable candidates for this study.
